I’m going to make a movie. I will keep you posted on the progress, but don’t expect things to develop too fast. A lot depends on things beyond my control, thus I’ll try to keep a low profile. I can’t even rule out the possibility that the whole thing goes to hell at some point. But I’m motivated and hopefully everything’s going to work out the way I anticipate it.

A few months ago I wrote the screenplay. There have been a few minor and one major revision in the meantime and now it’s 21 pages long. Thus, the movie will clock in at 20 minutes, give or take a few. In other words, it’s going to be a short movie. It’s going to be shot this summer or maybe even earlier. Please don’t expect a professional picture, let alone a proper commercial release. It’s all about making a movie with some friends and having some fun. I don’t have anything that deserves being called film making experience, after all.

I’m currently assembling the cast; or rather beginning to assemble the cast. Then I’m going to figure out a schedule for the shoot. Once that’s settled, I’ll have to look for a location. Rehearsals with the cast come next, preferably right before the actual shoot. Then it’s time to let the fun begin and film the scenes. As of today, there are 27 scenes, a few long ones and a lot of short ones. Finally, the movie will be cut and the sound will be slightly modified (i.e., music will be added). Depending on the quality of the results, I’ll consider further proceedings.

Stranger Than Fiction was the delightful comedy I had hoped for. It wasn’t flawless and I might have preferred a different ending. But Dustin Hoffman totally owned the screen and delivered some incredibly funny lines. I guess some of them are only funny in an academic context, e.g. the part about “little did he know”. I’ve seen plenty of movies with Emma Thompson, so I was surprised I wasn’t biased. It’s a pity that she and Hoffman didn’t get more screen time together. Her character was quite unique and therefore refreshing. As stupid as it may sound: I could relate to her, as far as that’s possible.

I just read the previous sentence, and boy, it does sound stupid. Anyway, I watched a couple of DVDs last week. Children of Men was a bit disappointing story-wise, but the camera work was nothing short of amazing. Michael Caine was superb and his joke about the Englishman eating stork fillet was hilarious. Having Deep Purple in the soundtrack didn’t hurt, either. The premise was fascinating and distressing. Compared to V for Vendetta, the plot was too simple and the resolution too arbitrary for my taste, though.

Some Kind of Monster was entertaining; a solid mixture of music, business, music business, and psychology. Some of the coolest scenes were on the second DVD (e.g., Lars Ulrich getting upset about Jason Newsted), so I was glad I didn’t watch it in the theatre in the first place. In case you think I’m watching too many movies, just take a look at Cinemania. It’s a documentary about five movie nerds who spend almost every waking hour in front of the big screen. Crazy stuff.

We Feed the World suffered from a slow pace. Still, the documentary about food production raised important issues and illustrated why I stopped eating meat a few years ago. And then there was a movie which can possible make you abandon fish: Airplane! I was surprised to see Julie Hagerty playing the female lead role. The DVD had an audio commentary track by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and producer Jon Davison. They basically laughed all the time. It wasn’t the annoying kind of laughter; neither was it the pointless kind of commentary that made Wedding Crashers even more boring. The guys just had a good time. The whole thing was almost as funny as the cast commentary on She’s the Man. (NB: Julie Hagerty is in that movie, as well!) Speaking of which: She’s the Man continues to be a source of joy and rapture. Even if it’s just a single line like Olivia warning Viola: “Beware the old guy chewing gum… it’s not gum.” Made me laugh for a couple of minutes, once again.

Yesterday, I was very lazy. I spent a couple of hours compiling a list of movies I’ve seen in my life so far. It’s too long to post here and, of course, incomplete. It’s funny and somewhat shocking how many American mainstream comedies there are on it. Did I really spend my childhood in front of the TV? No, I didn’t. Actually, I spent a considerable amount of time reading flight schedules.

Last Friday, I finished reading Lights, Camera, Amalee. It’s always a bit sad when you reach the end of a good book. You get to know the characters, you discover some new wisdom, you relate. And then, when it’s over, you don’t want it to be over, because the ending is filled with hope and expectations. It’s not open, don’t get me wrong. But instead of living another day with Amalee and her friends, it’s time to embrace reality and translate said wisdom into actions; always one of my weak points. Dar Williams managed to write a gripping story with many quirky, yet likeable characters. It features the protagonist of her first book, Amalee. While Dar struggled with a twist the first time around, her second book is all smiles and joy and elation. And frogs. Seriously, the more I think of it, the more admire her talent, because this time around, she managed to write a book for young people that is up-to-date and still feels very natural. In fact, it’s the opposite of pretentious. It’s all about being insatiable curious, valuing your friends, and making a movie.

Mit diesem Update möchte ich meine Freude über CDBaby.com und dieses Richard Linklater-Interview bekunden. Der CD-Versandhandel ist mir seit einigen Jahren immer wieder eine Quelle für schöne Musik. Bemerkenswert ist, dass er ohne Microsoft auskommt und auch die großen Musikkonzerne außen vor lässt. Stattdessen gibt es tolle Musik von Richard Shindell, Pineforest Crunch, Van Canto, Reminder, The Amber Light, The Razorblades, Girlyman und vielen anderen großartigen Interpreten zu kaufen. Das Gespräch mit Linklater über seinen aktuellen Film Fast Food Nation ist eins von vielen, die allesamt sehr lesenwert sind. Der Filmemacher macht deutlich, dass es nicht damit getan ist, alle paar Jahre eine Partei zu wählen und ansonsten über den Zustand der Welt zu lamentieren. Vielmehr haben wir ständig die Wahl. Mit allem was wir tun, kaufen, machen, sagen bewirken wir etwas. Abhängig davon, woher der Strom in unseren Steckdosen, die Lebensmittel auf unseren Tellern kommen und die Musik in unseren CD-Spielern kommt, bestärken oder schwächen wir Atomkraft, Massentierhaltung und kreative Gleichförmigkeit. Ich für meinen Teil will 2007 mehr denn je versuchen, mit meinen Alltagshandlungen diese drei Beispiele zu schwächen.

Nachdem ich ausgesprochen viel Gutes gelesen hatte (und Kevin Smiths “Vorbild” Richard Linklater es geschafft hatte, mit Before Sunset eine scheinbar unmögliche Fortsetzung genial zu inszenieren), war ich sehr gespannt auf Clerks II. Leider kann ich mich den Lobreden nicht anschließen. Ich verehre den ersten Teil und fand die Fortsetzung im direkten Vergleich sehr schwach. Natürlich gibt es sehr amüsante Szenen. Kevin Smith hat keinesfalls alles verlernt. Aber es ist, nun ja, bunt – nicht nur optisch. Der ganze Film ist stets ein Schritt zu weit im Lächerlichen. Statt den nervenden Kunden gibt es Elias; ansonsten ähnelt das Beziehungsgeflecht erschreckend dem ersten Teil. Ãœberhaupt fällt es mir schwer Kevin Smiths Äußerungen nachvollziehen, dass es im wichtig gewesen wäre, einen eigenständigen Film zu machen. Sicher, “37!” und “Not even supposed to be here today” fehlen. Aber alle zwei Minuten gibt es Flashbacks, z.B. gleich am Anfang mit “Hey, what do you want?” (Randal zur Drive-in-Kundschaft) und ohne Kenntnisse des ersten Teils dürfte der Film sehr verwirrend wirken.
Die Geschichte spielt zehn Jahre später. Davon merkt man allerdings kaum etwas. Es könnten auch zwei Wochen oder zwanzig Jahre sein. Am Ende wird zwar auf Teufel komm raus versucht, eine Botschaft zu vermitteln. Symptomatisch für das Fehlen selbiger ist Silent Bobs erste Zeile, die an sich völlig überflüssig ist bzw. einfach nonverbal kommuniziert hätte werden können. Zum Glück sagt er wenigstens in den “Deleted Scenes” die schöne Zeile “These aren’t the droid you’re looking for.”

Clerks II ist für meinen Geschmack einfach ein mittelmäßiger (kein schlechter!) Film mit alten Bekannten. Ich mochte das Ende, konnte mit der eigentlichen Geschichte aber keine Freundschaft schließen. Willkürlich, unoriginell, harmlos wären passende Attribute. Einzelne Szenen wissen freilich zu begeistern. Als Liebhaber von Clerks bleibt bei mir jedoch ein fader Nachgeschmack.

Es gab eine Reihe von schönen Alben, die 2006 veröffentlicht wurden. Meine drei Lieblingsscheiben sind

1. Van Canto: A Storm to Come
2. Eventide: Diaries from the Gallows
3. The Brandos: Over the Border

Das Brandos-Album hat zwar einige schwache Songs an Bord, aber nach der jahrelangen Warterei bin ich glücklich, dass die Band überhaupt noch mal eine CD rausgebracht hat. Der Titelsong und “Walking Home” können dafür voll und ganz überzeugen, so dass es immerhin noch zu einem dritten Platz reicht. Davor rangieren Eventide, deren Debüt von vorne bis hinten Weltspitzenklasse ist, sowie Van Canto, von denen ich im letzten Update bereits geschwärmt habe.

Bei den Filmen, die 2006 rauskamen, fällt eine Auflistung schon schwieriger. Auch nach langem Grübeln kann ich mich beim besten Willen nicht auf eine Reihenfolge festlegen.

• V wie Vendetta

Aus diesen Zutaten entstand der Film Wer früher stirbt, ist länger tot. Ich sah ihn gestern im Kino und habe herzhaft und andauernd gelacht. Wer meinen (bisweilen schwarzen) Sinn für Humor teilt, möge dies bitte als Empfehlung ansehen. Der Name ist vielleicht etwas unglücklich gewählt, bewahrt jedoch vor falschen Vorstellungen.

When I first saw Lost and Delirious, Piper Perabo just blew me away. Actually, the whole movie was amazing. Still, Piper’s character Paulie Oster stood out as a unique role. I didn’t think I’d ever see anything remotely comparable. If you liked the movie as much as I did (or even more), please don’t get your hopes up, when I say I was reminded of Paulie when I saw Agathe de la Boulaye in The Girl. I think both actresses look strikingly similar in their respective roles: their clothes, their gestures, their motions, their eyes. However, The Girl is a somewhat surreal movie. There’s almost no dialogue and the plot remains rather vague. The passion between the girl and the painter is intriguing, but the whole story remains terribly unreal. The first few scenes are really strong, though. In a matter of seconds, the two main characters are introduced and their relationship is established. What could have been an excellent outset for a thrilling romance is then turned into a dull art movie with tasteful pictures and a solid jazz sound track. In fact, you can just visit the official site and experience the elusive atmosphere of the movie. If you watch the movie, don’t expect anything to actually happen. Just enjoy its beauty.

Eine unbequeme Wahrheit war ein erstaunlich unaufdringlicher Film. Der Inhalt ist selbstverständlich trotzdem dringlich. Es ist ein erstaunlich nachhaltiger Film, weil er seine Botschaft präzise formuliert und greifbar transportiert. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass er einen wichtigen Teil zur Bekämpfung der globalen Erwärmung beiträgt. Ich kann den Kinobesuch jedenfalls sehr empfehlen, zumal ich überrascht war, wie ruhig aufrüttelndes Kino tatsächlich sein kann. Es ist ein kleiner Schritt zur Rettung der Welt.

Praktischerweise wurde She’s The Man – Voll mein Typ! in England bereits auf DVD veröffentlicht und ist nun Teil meiner Sammlung. Meine momentane Lieblingsszene ist Violas Entgegnung auf die Bitte ihres Ex-Freunds, für 5 Sekunden ein Mädchen zu sein.

Am Wochenende lieh ich erstmals DVDs in einer Konstanzer Videothek aus, da Eine Hochzeit zu dritt bereits im Angebot ist. Natürlich wollte ich zu einer guten Videothek gehen. Eine solche sollte sich natürlich dadurch auszeichen, dass man dort gute Filme leihen kann. Und siehe da, bereits die erste hatte sowohl das OmU-Video als auch die 3-DVD-10-Jahres-Jubiläumsversion von Clerks. Letztere nahm ich gleich mit und weiß nun so ziemlich alles über den Film.
