The world according to Jutze
Am letzten Donnerstag hatte ich das Vergnügen bei der Splitternacht im K9 in Konstanz ein paar 52-Sekunden-Lieder zu spielen. Außer mir traten unter anderem die lauffreudigen Motorsensen auf, deren Lied “Mein Projekt” mir besonders gut gefiel. Meine Setlist sah so aus:
Last Friday I played here in Konstanz at the Rheintorturm. Thomas and Suff-X played as well. It was a lot of fun. Here’s a first video from that evening, “Omas Weihnachtsessen” – a Paul and Storm cover.

Mein Auftritt im Vorprogramm von Phrasenmäher im Kulturladen hat Spaß gemacht! Meine Setlist sah ungefähr so aus:
Der Auftritt von Phrasenmäher war sehr kurzweilig. Ein, zwei Songs waren zu groovy und zu wenig rockig für meinen Geschmack – aber insgesamt klang das alles sehr ansprechend. Neben unterhaltsamen Liedern wie “Hochklappdings” und “Vater” gab es auch diverser improvisierte Einlagen, die für Kurzeweile (?) sorgten. Das Publikum, das bei mir noch überwiegend abwartend am Boden saß, war beeindruckend aktiv, springend, singend, divend und sogar joggend! Und nicht eine einzige Nase, die desinteressiert hinten stand. Schöner Konzertabend!
The gigs with Suff-X last weekend were thoroughly enjoyable. Especially the Opensee concert was a blast! We played a great show in front of 3000 surprisingly supportive people. Wahoo! Playing the drums for a change was a lot of fun. Check out some pictures! I also made a little behind-the-scenes video.
Next thing I knew I was sitting in a train to Amsterdam, where Jonathan Coulton (and Paul and Storm) played his first show in continental Europe. It was fun to meet folks from the forums and be surrounded by the eclectic population that is JoCo’s fan base. The concert was great, the banter hilarious and the city beautiful despite the light rain. I filmed a little travel diary. I also took some pictures.
Then I saw the Hooters in Würselen (near Aachen) at a beautiful venue (Burg Wilhelmstein). I sat near the mixing desk for a change and enjoyed the show from that perspective. My view looked like this. The setlist was spiced with a good dose of “Out of Body”, once again. No big surprises apart from that.
Vorgestern hatte ich meinen ersten öffentlichen Soloauftritt. (Bis dahin hatte ich nur bei meiner Abschiedsfeier 2001 einmal solo gespielt.) Mein Debüt fand im Rahmen der Kulturnacht statt. Die bunte Mischung aus Schauspiel Musik, Tanz und anderer Kunst wurde von KUK (Kultur Uni Konstanz) veranstaltet. Vielen Dank an dieser Stelle an alle Beteiligten für einen tollen Abend!
Die Veranstaltung fand im Kulturladen in Konstanz statt. Mein Auftritt umfasste drei Stücke und steht (ohne die Anmoderation) bei YouTube.
Gestern folgte spontan gleich der nächste Soloauftritt. Unter dem Motto Küchenkunst gab es in einer WG ein buntes Programm u.a. mit Goethes Zauberlehrling (nass und klasse), Kammermusik (emotional und klasse) und A Cappella (sehr unterhaltsam und klasse).
Ich spielte erneut einige meiner 52-Sekunden-Lieder. Es lässt sich schwer in Worte fassen, wie gut es sich anfühlte, nach einem Jahr des Schreibens und Aufnehmens die Songs in freier Wildbahn zu erleben. Auch an dieser Stelle vielen Dank für Einladung und das tolle Publikum!
PS: Meine Musik steht unter einer Creative-Commons-Lizenz (by-nc). Das heißt, solange Jutze dabeisteht und kein Geld damit gemacht wird, kann man die Lieder einfach kopieren, verschenken, hören, nachspielen, ausschneiden und anmalen.
One of Sweden’s finest punk rock bands, Ninja Dolls, visited Konstanz on Thursday night. They played a tight, quick set featuring three songs off their new “D.I.Y.”-EP along with most of the songs from “1 2 3 Go!” (which was one of my favourite albums 2009). Malin’s voice showed a little strain towards the end of the set, but overall she proved to be an excellent lead singer who handled the old material with ease. As an encore we got a nice cover version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”. Other highlights were the acoustic version of “Valentine” and, well, pretty much every other song. I only missed “Run and Hide”. Still, it was an enjoyable show, albeit a rather short one. (Just observing, not complaining here – admission was free, after all.)
Many years ago I discovered the music of Anvil Chorus. The band had been active in the early 80s. There were no proper releases except for one single (“Blondes in Black” b/w “Once Again”). But if one looked hard, one could get copies of old demos and live tapes. Those n-th generation copies sounded aweful, but the music itself not only stood the test of time, but even had a timeless quality only few metal bands can offer. The band reunited from time to time, but an album release seemed as unlikely as a show in Europe.
This year finally saw the release of the first CD by Anvil Chorus, “The Killing Sun”. I wrote a review in German over at Vampster.com. I thin it sounds rather tame, but songs like “Phase to Phase” and “Once Again” still sparkle. The lead guitars are amazing and the music, well, still timeless. And as if that weren’t enough, the band is scheduled to play in Germany at the Headbangers Open Air 2010!

Die schlechte Nachricht zuerst: Ich habe Mokka-Joghurt, aber keine Corn Flakes. (Ja, ja, da war ein Erdbeben und eine Bundestagswahl, ich weiß.) Trotzdem werte ich meinen ersten Tag in Konstanz als Erfolg. Wer mich kennt, weiß, was es mit obiger Nahrungsmittelkombination auf sich hat, und dass es auch nicht mein allererster Tag in Konstanz gewesen ist.
Heute drehten sich einige Gespräche um Kaffee. Ich mag ja Kaffee überhaupt nicht. Meine Vorliebe für eine bestimmte Joghurt-Sorte habe ich vorerst nicht erwähnt. Das stiftet anfangs immer nur Verwirrung. Dafür steht jetzt das Gerücht im Raum, ich sei Raucher. Dabei haben wir reichlich Stühle; es könnte sich ruhig setzen.

Maybe you already know it: I’m about to move back to Konstanz. Tomorrow will be the last day I’ll record music here in Trier. At least, that’s the plan. I’ll approach a wannabe-Nightwish song Susanne and I wrote during our last rehearsal, adding clavinet scales and double bass drums. I’ll also wrap the songs for the upcoming Manticess release (single, EP, whatever). I won’t be recording anything in October apart from stuff I can do outside my interim accommodation. It’s going to be headphones and mixing, instead. Finally, I should do something to bid this place farewell and to commemorate my time here. I created some of my favourite songs (e.g., A Mallful of Brains, Natalie Portman’s Doormat) at this place, after all.
