This is a last minute effort. I just played around, kept something, played some more, kept some more, mixed it, saved it, put it online. The title is a working title. I wish I could offer something more adequate, but it’s late and it would be too sad to miss the weekly deadline so close to New Year’s Eve. Anyway, this instrumental song features guitars and reverb.

This track should have some lyrics but it’s Monday evening and so I’m posting this as it is. The initial verse melody originally led to a e/C/G/D part. Maybe I’ll come up with a proper chorus at some point. For the time being, here’s an instrumental sketch.

#48 The One Who Buttons

This song just happened while I was attempting to write some progressive rock stuff. The ending of the melody was borrowed from an unreleased Manticess song (“Dragonfire”). I might still work on some progressive rock material later today, but for this week’s song I’ll leave you with this somber instrumental piece.

#47 Winter Mood

Ich habe die Zukunft gesehen. Sie tanzt. Von wegen Lisbeth spielten im Rahmen des Hellopop-Festivals in Stuttgart im Im Wizemann (Club). Mühelos überzeugte das Berliner Quintett das Publikum, in dem ich zur Abwechslung mal zu den älteren Semestern gehörte. Dabei gab es gleich zu Beginn zwei bislang unveröffentlichte Stücke. Melodie, Groove und Eingängigkeit waren aber auch hier sofort zur Stelle. Es gab reichlich Applaus. Die Band verzichtete angesichts der Festival-Situation auf ausschweifende Ansagen. Stattdessen gab es eine Stunde lang durchweg flotte Stücke, die mit Popappeal, eigenwilligen und doch auch nachvollziehbaren Texten und rockiger Liveatmosphäre punkten konnten.

Nachdem ich Von wegen Lisbeth im September diesen Jahres in Potsdam live gesehen hatte, ohne vorab mehr als ein paar YouTube-Videos zu kennen, war ich diesmal besser “vorbereitet”. So gefielen mir neben den Bandhits “Sushi” und “Lang lebe die Störung im Betriebsablauf” gerade die neuen (?) Songs “Bitch” (toller Beat, griffige Textphrasen in den Versen und im Refrain) und “Vor deiner Tür” (klasse Atmosphäre). Einmal mehr faszinierte die Band mit zahlreichen Instrumentenwechseln, gerne auch innerhalb einzelner Songs. Optisch zeigte sich die Klangvielfalt unter anderem in der Abwesenheit der sonst so verbreiten MacBooks. Auf alle Fälle war es ein starker Auftritt, der Von wegen Lisbeth einige neue Fans beschert haben dürfte. Ich hoffe nun, dass ich nicht allzu lange auf den nächsten Konzertbesuch warten muss.

This song is from last year’s Third Half effort. I recorded it in Bavaria on April 20th, 2014, having written it during the two days before. I have no idea what it’s about but I like it.

This is a bluesy rock and roll tune about ordinary things. And just in case you’re new here: This year I’m (once again) making a new 52-second song every week. The songs are often quick ideas, sketched out and recorded at the eleventh hour. The project forces me to be creative. It also keeps me playing and recording. I’m looking forward to the end of this ordeal at the end of December. This year’s run has been rather, well, forced, and I didn’t have as much time to dwell on detail, good lyrics, or strong melodies. Anyway, here’s the 12-bar blues mentioned at the beginning of this post a.k.a. a little experiment with slightly distorted vocals.

This tune is based on the idea that the piano is counting sheep. One note = one sheep. Next, two notes = two sheep. A new note is put at the beginning of the melody for each new sheep. The piano can be heard on one of the stereo channels. The other channel contains various other instruments who don’t really care about the sheep.
