Noch ein Lied über den Mars! Das hat der Welt noch gefehlt. Mir hat jedenfalls für diese Woche ein Lied “gefehlt”.

This is sort of a political song. About eight years ago I got the impression that Hillary Clinton would be the Democrats’ presidential candidate in the upcoming election. Sure, the system provided ample opportunities for other contenders to chime in. None of their names meant anything to me whereas Clinton was a household name. I fully expected her to win that race. Enter Obama. In June 2008, shortly after Hillary Clinton withdrew her candidacy, I bought an “Obama for President” baseball cap. The rest is history.

Just a few weeks ago I had the impression that Hillary Clinton would be the Democrats’ presidential candidate in the upcoming election. Yet, just like eight years ago, a “new” face has appeared. Like Obama, he’s not actually “new” to U.S. politics. More importantly, like Obama, he offers a refreshing alternative to Clinton’s “moderately conservative” direction. His name is Bernie Sanders. I have yet to acquire a “Sanders for President” baseball cape, but I’ve read various articles on him and statements by him over the past few weeks, finding little to nothing I don’t agree with – and now I wholeheartedly wish for him to become Obama’s successor. ISideWith.com (America’s Wahl-o-mat) confirmed this impression, yielding a 94% match for me.

Yes, I’m a German. I have no say in the U.S. presidential election. Then again, these are my songs, I can sing about whatever I want. So this week I used the opportunity to show my appreciation for this politician.

This is an embarrassing attempt to produce a disco song. It turned into sort of a techno song. It was supposed to reflect the story of “The Martian”, in which an astronaut is stranded on Mars with 70s disco music. Anyway, it’s Sunday, in other words, it’s time to put something, anything out there.

Dies ist der dritte deutsche Song in Folge – was ist nur los mit mir? In unzähligen Zeitschriften und Magazinen gibt es ständig neue Trends in Sachen Lebensgestaltung, Ernährung, Gesundheit usw. Praktisch immer sind es Sensationen, die alles bisherige in den Schatten stellen sollen. Für den Text dieses Lieds hier habe ich einfach mal ein paar wenige Ideen rausgepickt und additiv kombiniert. Die Musik musste ich hastig aufnehmen, weil das Lied sonst nicht ins 52-Sekunden-Format gepasst hätte.

Diese Woche war ich kurz davor, das 52-Sekunden-Projekt abzubrechen. So wie eigentlich jede Woche. Dann kam die Einsicht, dass ich das ja genau deshalb mache, damit ich übe, produziere, schreibe usw. Ich hatte erst mit einem Polka-Rhythmus in Dur gespielt, aber dann fand ich Moll passender. Da ich gerade mit Manticess-Zeug im Hintergrund gut beschäftigt bin, fehlt mal wieder eine aufwändige Produktion. Dafür gibt es ein Video von der Aufnahme.

Dieses Lied entstand Stück für Stück in recht kurzer Zeit. Das Video zeigt die Aufnahme. Mh, alles nicht so informativ. Meine Lieblingslieder auf Englisch zum Thema sind “Fragile” von Kamera und natürlich “Handle With Care” von den Traveling Wilburys.

This song was written on March 10th, 2012. Back then, it had high-pitched vocals that sounded quite terrible. In desperate need of a song for the current week I revisited this recording. I redid the vocals after 10 pm. So now I have little time to give you the back story. In short, I’m not a fan of nuclear power plants. I am a big fan of WatchTower.

This song developed over a couple of days, which I thankfully had at my hands. The chorus came first. Then what? It made me think of Shania Twain’s marijuana experience, which she described in her autobiography: “I mean, it did make me dizzy and giddy, but at that age, so did having a good laugh over an unexpected, loud fart.” (p. 94)

Once I had the chords and the melody, I wasn’t sure what rhythm to use. I could have turned it into a fun 4/4 punk song. The acoustic approach makes the lyrics stand out, though. I think. After a few video-less weeks, I also made a video. Hopefully, the next video will feature not just the lower half of my face. The final chorus should be “some do it quietly”, right? But hey, I’m a German. I’m ignorant of adverbs. Ha! (Sorry.)

Schon wieder ein instrumentales Stück. Diesmal gibt es Heavy Metal. Den Titel hat sich sicher schon mal eine andere Band ausgedacht, weshalb ich jetzt gar nicht nachschaue. Die Musik hatte ich bereits vor einem Monat geschrieben, doch erst heute endlich mal aufgenommen.

This happens when I’m in the mood of writing a punk song about heavy metal. I tried several angles until I found that focusing on one year and leaving out band names actually works, sort of. The lyrics are not a comprehensive list of 1988 in metal (which was a good one if you ask me), but it covers my favourite albums along with a bunch of stuff that’s at least okay.
