ANOVA (mit gerichteten Kontrasten)

This is a song about statistics, more specifically analysis of variance (ANOVA) and its possible romantic implications. I enjoy data analysis and dread the day the lyrics become autobiographical. A former fellow student inspired me to the chorus when I visited him early in August 2008. I wrote the lyrics on the train home and wrote and recorded everything a couple of days later. There’s drums, guitars (acoustic and electric ones), keyboards (bass and piano), vocals (lead and harmony!), a few recorder notes, and even hand claps!

Rechenaffe

This is me trying to translate the genius of Jonathan Coulton into my small German world – and failing. The facts: Code Monkey is the original song/title. The instruments on my version are drums, acoustic guitars, glockenspiel, keyboards (bass and organ), and ukulele. The recordings took place on 2nd July 2008. I made this demo after a six month hiatus of recording/playing and I’m afraid it shows. Therefore, this should not be regarded as the definitive version, but rather as a rough outline, a vague idea, a nice song if I could actually sing, etc.

Rechenaffe mag Pizza.
Rechenaffe mag Leitungswasser pur.

Rechenaffe mag Pizza.
Rechenaffe mag Leitungswasser pur.

Rechenaffe mag Pizza.
Rechenaffe mag Leitungswasser pur.

Practical tips for statisticians (part 3)

Here is a short overview of a few LEM models with distinct local features:

  • The Australian model: mod {AC,DC} – yields always the same results, but with different titles
  • The Swedish model: mod {AB,BA} – no longer updated, but still very popular
  • The German model: mod {AD,AC} – no speed limit
  • The Norwegian model: mod {A,HA} – still updated, but not as popular as the Swedish model

Practical tips for statisticians (part 2)

Things STATA cannot do:

  • knead your feet
  • explain the meaning of your data
  • understand telepathically transmitted instructions
  • raise the dead
  • tap-dance
  • turn silver into gold*
  • love you back
  • moan at incompetent users

NB: This list is incomplete and applies to the versions 10 and lower.

*literally, that is; otherwise:

gen silver = 37
rename silver gold

99 Sekunden

. do master

It’s the Library

The University of Konstanz has an excellent library. The collection of books on data analysis is excellent and you can spend many hours in the computer pools on level B6 with STATA. There is also a growing number of audio-visual resources, mainly video tapes. As a connoisseur of comedy, absurdity, and statistics I can highly recommend the Black Adder-series, Airplane!, or the complete introductory course in research methods lecture.

With the advent of DVD technology most new items are on DVD and therefore more popular among the students. In other words, there is a reservation list for most of the good stuff. I don’t really mind and hope I don’t sound complaining. The reason for this long introduction escapes my memory, so here’s the thing: I was quite surprised to find the English version of She’s the Man on the shelf. It’s “based on Shakespeare”, I know, but it’s not sorted with the rest of that stuff. Could it be that someone working there realized the sheer brilliance of the movie? Grasped its timeless kind-heartedness? Experienced the exuberant joy upon watching it?

Practical tips for statisticians (part 1)

Don’t try to say “tilde” (~) whilst brushing your teeth.

Verschwimmende Grenzen

. use buegelbrett
. sort tisch
. buegel waesche01-waesche20
